Mail Theft
Posted By dstgeorge on December 21, 2021
There has been an increase in mail theft both nationally and locally. With the increase in mail volume over the holidays, the opportunity for theft increases. Please take the time to secure your mail and keep your identity safe.
Ways to prevent mail theft:
1. Do not send cash in the mail.
2. Remove mail from boxes every day, as soon as possible.
3. Don’t leave mail in your mailbox overnight, especially if you’re expecting checks or credit cards.
4. Deposit outgoing mail in slots inside post offices or hand it to mail carriers.
5. Ask your bank for “secure” checks that can’t be altered.
6. Report mail theft to police and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 800-275-8777 (not your local post office).
7. Request a vacation hold even if you will be gone for just a few days. This can be done at a post office or online at holdmail.usps.com/holdmail.
